Global air traffic in flight

Aircraft picked up by the open adsb.lol receiver network at the time of the reading, over ten discs of 250 nautical miles radius centred on the world's major traffic basins. Aircraft broadcast their own position, altitude and speed over ADS-B.

Medians cover aircraft in flight only. An aircraft broadcasting neither altitude nor speed enters no median, but is still counted among the aircraft tracked.

The fastest aircraft

Ground speed, across all regions. It combines the aircraft's own speed and its tailwind: a westerly to easterly flight over the North Atlantic can gain more than a hundred knots from it.

State aircraft

35 aircraft flagged as military or governmental in the adsb.lol database were broadcasting their position at the time of the reading, worldwide. Many state aircraft do not broadcast, or mask their identity: this list therefore says nothing about what flies unannounced.

Source and freshness

Every position on this page comes from adsb.lol, an open network of volunteer receivers. They are requested by our servers and cached for 60 seconds: your browser never calls adsb.lol, and the network receives one request per minute per region, whatever the number of visitors.

Network coverage is very uneven: dense over Europe and North America, sparse over Africa, the oceans and parts of Asia. A low aircraft count in a region therefore measures the density of ground receivers first, not the density of traffic. These figures are neither an official count nor a navigation source.
