Climate and alerts

Two sections on what disturbs the planet and its immediate environment: natural disasters under way, and solar activity, which affects power grids, satellites and high frequency communications. Each page gives the raw figures, the date of the reading and the name of the source.

The sources

Earthquakes come from the public feed of the United States Geological Survey, which publishes every tremor of magnitude 4.5 and above within minutes of detection, then revises it. Wildfires, volcanoes and storms come from EONET, the natural event observation service of NASA's Goddard centre. Humanitarian alerts come from GDACS, the European Commission's alert and coordination system, which rates each event green, orange or red according to the expected impact on populations.

Space weather comes from the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, which publishes the planetary Kp index every three hours, solar wind measurements continuously, and its alert bulletins as soon as a threshold is crossed.

All four providers are called by our servers and their responses are cached for fifteen minutes: none of them is called from your browser. When a source does not respond, its section disappears from the page and the page says so.
